Fuel System Preparation
Stale fuel is the number one cause of post-storage starting problems. Add a quality fuel stabiliser to a full tank and run the engine for 5 minutes to circulate treated fuel through the carburettor or fuel injection system.
For storage exceeding 3 months, consider draining the carburettor bowl on carburetted models. Fuel-injected machines benefit from simply keeping the tank full with stabilised fuel to prevent condensation and rust.
Battery Maintenance
Disconnect the negative terminal or use a maintainer/trickle charger to keep your 12V Powersports Battery charged. A battery left idle for months will sulfate and fail to hold charge. Monthly top-up charging prevents this entirely.
Store the battery in a cool, dry location if removing it from the machine. Clean terminals and apply dielectric grease before reconnecting in season.
Fluid and Mechanical Care
Change engine oil before storage rather than after — old oil contains acids and contaminants that corrode internal components over months. Top up coolant to the maximum mark and verify it has adequate anti-freeze protection.
Inflate tires to maximum recommended pressure to prevent flat spots. Place the ATV on a stand if possible to relieve suspension and tire pressure. Lubricate drive chain, control cables, and exposed metal surfaces with appropriate protectants.
Cover and Location
Store indoors in a ventilated, dry space away from direct sunlight and moisture. Use a breathable cover — not plastic that traps humidity. Block exhaust outlets and air intakes to prevent rodent nesting, but label them clearly for removal before starting.
Run the engine monthly for 5–10 minutes if storage extends beyond 60 days. This circulates oil, charges the battery, and prevents seal drying.
