Understanding Viscosity Grades
The numbers on oil containers (e.g., 10W-40) describe viscosity — how thick the oil is at different temperatures. The first number (10W) indicates cold-start flow; the second (40) indicates viscosity at operating temperature.
Most modern 4-stroke ATVs specify 10W-40 or 10W-50 fully synthetic oil. Always follow your owner's manual. Using heavier oil (20W-50) in hot climates may seem logical but can starve upper engine components during cold starts.

Run the engine for 30 seconds, shut off, wait 2 minutes, and check the dipstick level. Overfilling causes seal leaks and smoking; underfilling causes engine damage.
